Ok, I just bought a '99 VW GOlf GL. When I bought it, the gas gauge wasn't giving any reading - I knew that and bought it anyway although I don't know what the problem is. Actually, when i start the car it moves a little, but other than that the reading stays on empty. Also (and I don't know if this is involved) the check engine light came on recently so I got the code and it says that there is a large EVAP leak. I know it's not the gas cap, but I haven't had a chance to take it in yet. Can anyone tell me if these things may be related and or what the possibilities may be? Thanks so much, this is my first VW and I am kinda lost here.

EVAP leak could be a bad gas cap.
The two problems you mention are not related.
The gas gage has a float inside the fuel tank that registers the level of gas in the tank.
It may be faulty, or a wire may have become disconnected to it. Or, it could be the gage it's self. It's hard to say without testing it.

Either way. Seek help from a trusted local mechanic.

the large evap leak is going to be probably vacuum line that pulled off of a canister looking thing mounted on the body to either side of the engine. probably a black plastic ball looking thing. that however shouldnt have anyhting to do with the gas gauge not working. the gas gauge problem probably isnt a fuse or there would be a bunch of other stuff that doesnt work either. one pos ability is that if the car had been just setting for a long time the sensor in the tank could have stuck in place. if that is the case then keeping gas in it and driving it should break it free but may not. but odds are either the sensor broke or there is a bad conection in the wire where it plugs into the gas tank/broken wire. or i could be totaly wrong as the germans do some funky stuff :D lol

Usually when your engine light turns on and gives you a EVAP leak it's either two things you have a leak somewhere on your vacuum lines up front or your gas cap is bad (yes they do go bad). now on your gas tank i had a similar problem with an old ford car, they all have a resister type deal that when your gas starts running out it goes down and sends less resistance to your gauge making it move down. is just a small copper circuit with a lever. it will cost you some money to have that check because they will have to drop down the gas tank. also why did you buy a Golf they are really bad seriously. go Toyota,Honda maybe Nissan, dont buy a 4 cylinder american car they are crap.
