I have a friend who wanted me to ask this question for her. She is supposed to get breast augmentation surgery next tuesday, but she thinks that she may be pregnant. Would there be any risks to the developing babies health if she were to receive anestisia and go under the knife for breast augmentation? thank you.

uh yeah. it can cause miscarraige and deformities. pregnancy is not an ideal time to have any surgery let alone cosmetic. she needs to find out for sure and let the docs know. tell her to breastfeed and she will get all kinds of boob growth naturally

They will ask her if she's pregnant before hand, if she's not sure they'll run a pregnancy test. If she is pregnant they won't do the surgery. The anestisia they use wouldn't be good for the baby, but the surgery wouldn't be good for her. A woman's immune system is almost non-existant during pregnacy to keep the body from attacking the growing fetus. So she would not heal quickly or well if she were to get it done.

One of the main concerns that doctors and anesthesiologists have when operating on a pregnant woman is preterm labor. For this reason, pregnant women are advised to put off any surgery that can wait until the second or third trimester, preferably the third trimester. For doctors and pregnant women who are particularly cautious, regional anesthetics can minimize the exposure of anesthesia to the fetus, and thei use is safe when pregnant. However, some surgery requires the use of general anesthesia. Women who worry whether surgery and anesthesia are safe when pregnant may wish to consult their obstetrician, surgeon and anesthesiologist for peace of mind.

She may want to wait if she wants her baby to be OK and she may not even need surgery after birth because she will get bigger naturally...Good Luck!!

Yes. She should be tested to see if she is pregnant prior to the surgery. In most cases, they put off surgery until the 2nd trimester, but for something optional, like augmentation, they would wait until after baby is born.

Anethesia causes increased incidence of miscarriage and premature birth, most specifically. According to what I read, it has not been shown to cause any specific birth defects.

Can we say selfish? Is she thinks she might be pregnant she should definitely steer clear of cosmetic surgery until she knows for sure. It will cause the baby unnecessary stress and will be a total waste of money as she will have to have the procedure repeated after she has the baby.

Yes, there are risks. She should tell her doctor that she might be pregnant and then get a test to confirm it. Also, if she is pregnant, her breasts are going to be changing in response to hormones. She would want to postpone the surgery because it might not turn out the results she would want.

She better talk to a doctor and get a pregnancy test before she goes into the OR to get her boobs done!

It could be serious if she goes under while pregnant, with all the trauma being done to her and the anesthesia it could affect her baby.

YES, she cannot have the procedure if she thinks she is pregnant. First of all it puts the child in danger but also if she is pregnant her breasts are going to swell on their own. Cancel the surgery.

i would have her speak to her doctors and get a pregnancy test taken before she does this. your first trimester is the most critical so if she is they might postpone this operation to later in her pregnancy or wait till after the baby is born

YES! She could easily miscarry. Anesthesia relaxes you, relaxes everything and may just let that baby come out. She needs to tell her Doc.
