A Stingray pierced his heart with a barb located on its back. In doing so, it injected its venom directly into Steve's heart. He died almost instantly.

Stingray barb to the heart. Strangely I read a few days later that another person survived the same injury. Maybe a hoax. Just lets us remember the Red Cross training ... If you have an injury where a nail or whatever is there - don't remove it. You bleed more.

A stingray barb pierced him through the heart whilst he was filming his latest (and final) documentary, ironically names "Ocean's Deadliest". The footage of Steve dying has never been released however you can buy a copy of the documentary either online or at ABC shops.

.he cornered a sting ray and was not wearing his protective suit as it would not look right on TV. The ray hit his heart with the barb on the end of it's tail. They are not aggressive creatures and are very curious---will swim around you---checking you out--- scary enough as they are large but really elegant sea creatures and move very gracefully.

I think he was in the water trying to work with the gators and a string ray struck him in the heart and he died immediately. From what I heard he suffered little and there was nothing that could have been done to save him.

he was filming in the water and swimming on top of a sting ray and it jabbed him in the heart
