definite. They value extra advantageous than a cent each for the government to make and distribute. We mint approximately 6 billion each 365 days, and each physique ends up in a internet loss of something extra advantageous than a million/2 a cent. in view that 1982, we've made them out of zinc (bearing directly to the main inexpensive steel there is) with a skinny copper coating. If a toddler swallows one, and the copper is breached in any way (say by utilising a scratch), the uncovered zinc will disolve interior the tummy, top-rated to conceivable zinc toxicity. whether it somewhat is no longer swallowed, a smash interior the copper exposes the zinc. The zinc and copper react like a susceptible battery and the zinc corrodes until eventually the coin falls aside. we've reached the factor that we are making them self-destructing, and no person cares. while that happens to a coin, it somewhat is time for it to bypass.
