It seems as if the people of England and the Commonwealth countries pay all that tax money to basically have someone that does nothing else except wave. You could have a electromechanical dummy with a servo-controlled arm do the same thing for a lot less money.

Has she ever been known to do anything else in public?

If you really care to know what Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll does with her time then you would find out if you take the time to read this....
http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page6.asp
and whilst you are reading it just remember that she is now 81 years old...what will you be doing with YOUR time if you get to live to that age...

As for the tax money...we in the UK each pay around 75 pence each YEAR towards the civil list which goes to pay for the upkeep of the palaces and the staff wages...that is a year and not a day, week, or month...and actually, the Queen and all the members of the Royal Family pay tax as well, and it was Queen Elizabeth ll who instigated that. Also the monies paid back into the country from the Royal Estates amounts to the hundreds of millions a year as opposed to the tens of millions paid into the civil list by the tax payer...

God Save the Queen!

For a start, the correct term is Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & the commonwealth countries.
Or are Scotland, Wales & Ireland so unimportant that we can be forgotten? We, in Scotland, do not have independence yet you know.
Also, if the Queen is so pointless & useless, why are Americans queueing up just to get a glimpse? What does that say about them?

The Queen acts as an advisor to the elected government.
Each day,she reads through boxes of official government papers, many of which require her signature. She never has a day off from official papers.
She acts as the U.K.'s primary diplomat when she meets with foreign dignitaries or tours other countries.
The Monarchy happens to be the U.K.'s biggest tourist attraction;people go to England to get a glimpse of Buckingham Palace and perhaps a glimpse of living history,a glimpse at the Queen herself.

The Queen visits with her mother's relatives;she also visits with other aristocrats who are old family friends.Since the Queen has many residences,I think these are quiet dinner engagements, and she isn't an over-night guest. There are security concerns to be considered;any place the Queen visits has to be vetted and undergo a security sweep before she can go there. The Queen always has to be mindful of her position, but she is allowed to have fun.

If you can stand on your feet for most of the day, make public speeches constantly and shake hands with hundreds of people per day, when you are 81 years old, you will be lucky.

Yes it does seem like a waste of money, considering, she is one of the richest women in the world, and from what I have read, one of the cheapish.

She doesn't have a proper job but the british constitution requires her to sign acts of parliament so they become law. That's about it really.
