I'm thinking of getting Guild Wars and I have some friends that play WoW. They're regularly getting updates or patches, that release new weapons, armors, and quests. Does Guild Wars do that too???

Guildwars is not wow . period.
Guildwars is a competitive online game rather than a traditional MMORPG.
Yes, guildwars updated a lot !. Much more often than wow. Most of the wow update are about bug fixxing and rebalancing . Most of Guildwars updates are about competitive ( pvp ) matter.
If you expect GW to be like wow, you are wrong. Two games have different theme. If you like role playing game, play wow. If you like playing pvp under a role playing theme, play GW.
However, GW2 , smell like more about a mmorpg wich has many innovative changes.

Yes and no. For patches, they both update regularly.
For CONTENT patches, WoW patches more than GW. Please remember that GW is really a PVP kinda game, with much of its quests focused to building you to compete on the PVP level.
On the other hand, until recently, GWs put out more content expansions that WoW. They may be three separate games,but they do expand on one another. (GWs just recently stopped doing this, there is one true expansion coming around December, then a year or so before GW2 comes out.)

Why dont you just play WoW with your friends.... it's the #1 MMORPG for a reason. :)
