If you know Algebra...
Let x=Original Cost of Camera
Following me so far, yes?
Verbal Model, Fancy for Description:
Camera+Tax=Total
Plug in x for camera
x+Tax=Total
Plug in Total
x+Tax=71.35
Tax can be found by multiplying the percent of tax with the original cost. In this case we are multiplying 0.05 (percent of tax) with x (orignal cost). We get 0.05x
Plug in Tax
x+0.05x=71.35
We solve...
1. Multiply by 100 on both sides to remove the nasty decimal.
100x+5x=7135
2. Add the x's
105x=7135
3. Divide both sides by 105.
105x/105=7135/105
4. TA_DAA! We end up with...
You figure it out, I explained the process. I'm not telling the answer though...Sorry

In this case, $71.35 is 105%. (Letting the original cost be 100% + 5% of sales tax)
To get the original cost, just multiply 71.35 by 100/105. With that, your answer should be 67.952. To the nearest cent, the camera cost $67.95. Get it?

$3.57 is the tax so $71.35 - $3.57= $67.78.

Figure it out by setting up a cross multiplication problem like this

X 5
---------- = -------
$71.35 100

The cross multiply $71.35 X 5 and divide by 100 to find the value of X . X is the amount of you taxes. The subtract the taxes from the total of $71.35

It's $67.95.

To check, multiply $67.95 by .05 sales tax (just the way the computer did at the store) and you get $3.3975. Round this sales tax amount off to $3.40 and add $3.40 to $67.95 and you get the original $71.35 - :)

The camera cost 67.95 before tax was added. (3.40 was added as tax). If you want to check your answer, take 67.95 by .05, (3.3975 rounded off to 3.40). Then add the 3.4 to 67.95 you should get 71.35.

I think you would multiply 71.35 by .05 and then subtract that answer from 71.35... I think but not positive

$67.78

take $71.35x.05=3.57 (rounded up because the number that it equals is3.5675)
then $71.35-3.57= $67.78
