Well Kennedy was just getting broke in and everybody was saying he was to young and how he would handle foreign affairs. This was one of the first things that his admin. did, and it was a major flop! Kennedy never had any pull in the South usa, that's why he ran with LBJ from Texas. The South didn't ever support Kennedy and to start off with a major disaster was like when Carter tried to free the Iran hostages back in the 80's. It flopped! Then we lose control of the oil fields, and then all of Cuba after the fiasco. Then it caused a weakness in that part of the world that Russia tried to exploit.
Then of course the missile crisis was because of that loss also. Hey one side point was when Kennedy was shot, it was proved that a man could get off 3 rounds in 8 seconds, and Lee was a great marksman in the Marines, he could hit 49 out of 50 bulls eyes from that same distance and it is recorded if you ever wanted to look up sucha thing...

Because it FAILED.
Wrong to engage in in the first place, but once in, the US should have carried it through to completion. Nobody would have worried about it then. If the Japanese had won WWII, Pearl Harbor would be a shining example of military cleverness and expertise.
