Actually, the expression is based on truth.

You remember the guillotine, right?

In the days of ancient France when beheadings
were lawful punishment of transgressors,
there was a sect of French jesters, known
as what translates as, the L'effeurs.

These L'effeurs had been outlaws of lesser
crimes, and as part of their agreement with
the strict authorities of the times, they were
set free after time-served with an obligation.

As a community service, when a prisoner was
sentenced to a beheading, one of the L'effeurs
was called-in to perform as jester for the townsfolk.

As time passed, civility and compassion grew
among the people. And upon gathering at these
gruesome events, they would chant, not in cruel
mockery as they had before, but in a state of
joyous drunkenness.

They encouraged the jesters, the L'effeurs, to
act as a happy distraction for the criminal about
to confront his doom. For generations, the
L'effeurs were so brilliant in their clever
ways, everyone would go home cheerful,
because the deathrow turnovers themselves
had had such a good time just prior to
the heavy blade gouging through.

It's where we get the word, 'laugh' from: L'effeur.

And the expressions, "Having his last laugh,"
and, "Laughing his head off."

yes, my best friend started choking on air and my other best friend laughed until her head came off and rolled underneath my bed. We now keep it under there and feed it once a day. Her body is still a part of society, but is constantly walking into things. We mostly keep it tied up in my garage
