If you are looking for great mileage, it should ring a bell to knock out all the domestics right away. If you want mileage, you probably shouldn't look at true performance cars because most of them would use at least a V6 engine, which won't give more than 20 mpg on average.
As for sporty cars...depending on your budget, I'll start high (reasonably for a first car). The new BMW 335i is out and generates a lot of buzz. Its got a twin turbo 6, but I would doubt its mileage as being good. If you've got the money, this is like buying insurance on universal opinion.
I would really eye the new Audi TT; its got the great new double clutch trany.. worth a test drive at the least and you'll fall in love with it. It comes with an inline engine that is more fuel efficient.
I would also wait for the Lancer Evo X. Amazing 2.0 liter turbo engine capable of racing an M3, you'll blow all your friends away. The regular Lancer is less than spectacular with its performance.
Then of course there are the Accord and Altima coupes that are going to hit the market shortly. These Japanese cars will always have something for fuel efficiency; most people never go wrong with them. More upscale would be the coming Infiniti G37 (G35 coupe redesigned).
The Acura RSX was mentioned earlier; it also has a great 2 liter engine that pumps out a lot of power for being naturally aspirated (without the help of turbos), and to me this is more of a girl car, especially those in white.
Looking for something spiffy would be the cool Volkswagen hatchbacks. The VW's GTI is pretty nice, also comes with the same unbelievable transmission as the new Audis. Again, if you can wait, the new R32 is on its way as well.
If you are looking for something more economical, the Mazda 3 hatch (or Mazdaspeed if you really emphasize sport) is known for its great handling and exciting ride.
That's all I can think of for now.. I hope some of these hit your definition of what you meant by a sports car. Many listed are not truly sports cars, but rather sporty performance based sedans and coupes. But for your first car I would like to think any one of those would be more than enough.

Stupid kid, stuck on image.
Get a VW Golf TDI. Fast enough, cool enough, cheaper insurance since it`s not really a "sports" car, and it`s Diesel so it`ll get 50mph.
I had a Peugeot 505TD and it hauled *** while getting 40mpg!
