The model that we had when my son was born could be used with just a seatbelt, but the one we have for our daughter cannot. So I guess it will depend on the brand of carseat you get and whether it has the option of using just a seatbelt for installation.

In most cases, the base is there for convience. If your car seat has the the spaces for the seat belt to be on to it, then you don't need a base. I haven't seen a car seat recently that does not have the openings for the seat belt. I personally don't like the angle the base makes the baby sit in, but it easier to transfer in and out. I haven't heard of a law about the base.......yet!

I dont know about the specific laws in your state, but I've never heard of one here (in FL) that says you must use a base. If the seat is PROPERLY installed without the base, it certainly is SAFE. However, not having the base makes PROPER installation much less likely b/c you have to check angle (45*) and tightness (Should not move more than 1" in any direction - or at all in my opinion) EVERY TIME.

Check with your local highway patrol, they may offer free installation and advice and can certainly answer any questions you have.

All carseats have a base, whether or not the carrier is removable is the difference. If you are asking if you can just strap the carrier portion into your car...the answer is NO, that carseat would be ALL over the place just driving normally...imagine what would happen if you were involved in a crash. All carriers come with a base, so I really don't know why you would even attempt to not utilize it.

Most of the car seats can be used without the base but the base is safest. It is also easier on you all you have to do is put the car seat on the base and listen to the click and your done, without the base you have to get into the car mess with the seatbelt, etc etc it's more hassle in my eyes.....

why would you put your baby at risk by just being lazy and halfass straping the carrier part in? I would check your car seat. IF the carrier part can be strapped in legally and safely then you dont need the base. If legally the carrier part can not be strapped in, and you rig it up you are going to get a ticket for a hefty sum if cops stop you. Most base\carrier combos were made that way for ease so you didnt have to constantly take the seat in and out or have to buckle and unbuckle the kid every time. I did alot of checking on seats and carriers and I have boughten 2. For the newborn I bought the highest rated base/carrier and as far as research go I dont know any base/carrier combo that the carrier can just be strapped in. As for the other one I bought for bigger kids and it goes up to 5 years old. That one doesnt have a base at all.

To my knowledge you can just strap them in. The base is just there to make it easier for you to get the seat in and out.

They do not require bases. But they're easier to install with the base.
