As kids, we always had Saltines AND Soda Crackers. The Soda Crackers definitely tasted different, a little heavier cracker than a Saltine...and definitely no salt on top of it. The Soda Crackers were a different shape, more like the shape of a Graham Cracker, and the texture was quite different. If memory serves me well, they came in a green box.
I'm still trying to find the Soda Crackers I remember as a kid in the 40s and 50s. I get something at La Tienda (Latina Mercado) that says Export Sodas, and they do not have any salt on them, but they're not exactly as I remember Soda Crackers. They're just a little to light & crispy.
There "was" something different about Soda Crackers, which I always preferred over regular Saltines.

Nabisco starting calling them saltines in 1969 but they had been selling them since the 1800's as soda crackers. " In 1876 at a county fair in St. Joseph, Mo., the blue ribbon for excellence went to a soda cracker later christened ''Premium,'' beginning a century-long tradition as America's No. 1 selling saltine cracker. Before 1876, Premium Crackers enjoyed great success but that success was among limited distribution to households west of the Rockies. The 1876 county fair changed all that, though. The National Biscuit Company (forerunner of today's Nabisco) bakeries nationwide began making and distributing Premium Soda Crackers. Saltines and soda crackers are the same. It was back in the 60s they changed the name from soda to saltine. Or so I'm told.....I'm not that old😁

I can't find any history as to why they are called two different names. It looks like they are made from the same ingredients. I found a little history in regards to how the name cracker originated.

My mom use to call them that too. I guess because they are made with a type of soda (baking soda) I guess.

My granny says that in her day (the old days) they always ate crackers with soda and it helped with stomack ailments.
