I think that you should do a little research and make this decision for yourself. I have raised three children and am now the grandmother of seven. I did not tell my children which party to join. They each made their own decision and we have members of each party in our family.
Do some research and find which party you best agree with and then make the choice for yourself.

At 18 years old, you will find that neither party will meet all of your needs. Eventually, you will side with the one that holds the majority of your views. The key point is to never become a republican or democratic hack where you simply regurgitate everything that the party believes in. I usually vote republican because they usually match my views more closely. But, I have voted for democrats before and I am sure I will again. Be sure to get your news and information from multiple sources to help you determine what you do and do not support about certain policies.

You still have plenty of time to decide. You could also register to be an Independent. Right now there is a big diversity of politicians running for both parties and there will be some dropping out and some joining in the crowd later. By the time the presidential election comes around, you will have made up your mind which type of party politics you prefer.

I have learned over time the republicans tend to have better candidates and democrats have a better party format . I would register neither you just don't get to vote in the primaries just in the main final votes.

You have many parties to choose from besides Dem or Rep. Investigate some of these : Independents, Green Party, Working Families etc . Maybe one will suit your opinions better than Rep or Dem.
Or maybe you want to choose the "I do not wish to enroll in a political party at this time" box. If you do that you can still vote in main elections any way you choose.

Are you liberal or conservative or a centrist? You should look into the platforms of both parties and then decide which has views that more closely align with your own. If you are like the typical American neither party is 100% consistent with all of your beliefs, so you will align based on what is most important to you.

Dont worry about parties. Spend your time learning about the candidates and the issues you believe in and find out who has a record of supporting what you believe in and then vote for them.

You can register as an Independent if you cannot decide. It would just affect your ability to vote in primaries.
