In many of the stories (most of them in fact) that serve as the origins of the Arthurian themes we are used to, Lancelot does nothing of the sort. However, this theme, of Sir Lancelot betraying his king by becoming the Queen's lover is so appealing to some, and may have been based on the Tristan/Isolde theme, or similar stories of the time in France.

While it is true that Guinivere, and Lancelot were involved in affair, it was much more that just a offended husband's pique. Considering that Guinivere was married to Arthur, the affair was viewed as an act of treason against the crown. Due to this, Arthur was put in a position where he had to apply the laws he promised would be equally applied to all people. This made both offenders guilty of a criminal act, and the penalty was death. Both were sentenced to death by burning at the stake. Lancelot escaped, and was considered a fugitive. Guinivere was arrested, and when Lancelot received word of her sentence, he rescued her from Camelot. A conflict between Arthur, and Lancelot's family ensued, which had no final result. The conflict took place in Gaul (now known as France), where Lancelot was from, and a report of Roman invaders interrupted the conflict, along with the fact that Modred, who was Arthur's illegitimate son, attempted a coup to overthrow Arthur. The epilogue to all the drama involved Arthur being killed at the Battle of Camlann, where he faced Modred. Guinivere and Lancelot saw each other one final time after the Arthur's death. Guinevere returned to the convent where she had taken refuge during the attempted coup by Modred, and remained there until the end of her life. Lancelot, after a time of wandering, retired into hermitage, living the rest of days peacefully. According to legend, he outlived both Arthur and Guinevere.

Didn't he run off with the Queen, King Arthur's wife? Lady Genevieve? or something like that...
However, if you read the story of King Arthur from the book "Mysts of Avalon," I don't think King Arthur was too upset by this.
