Well... she's one of the "Lonely People". She might be lonely because she's waiting for a certain someones return. She remembers how she looked when they left, and that's the only person she needs to see that face. It's preserved in the jar so that the "someone" will recognize the face from long ago. Otherwise, she's almost invisible in society-by her choice, with her forgettable face-and forgettable life.
