Yowser. A lot of people here angry at "cruelty free" products. Yes, there are many gray areas. Yes, there are many instances where animal testing is required, especially in drug and medical procedure testing. Heck, many animals have benefited from animal testing... and there have been benefits from morally questionable "human testing"... But there is something very good about trying to stick to products that are made from simple ingredients that are known to be safe, no animal testing required. If we keep animal testing to a bare minimum, only use it in instances where it is clearly needed, I think that is one of many many steps towards a better society.

Next time you feel smug buying a product labeled "cruelty-free", check the label, and write down the ingredients. THEN do some research, and find out how many of those ingredients were approved by the FDA for use on/in humans. If it was approved by the FDA to be "safe" for you to use, then there was animal based (it may have been via cell cuture, BTW) testing involved to make sure that product would not make you go blind if you got it in your eyes. Just because no-one tested the final product on animals does not mean that safety testing is not required for new potential drugs, ingredients, or foods.

Haunted fox is right - just because the final product hasn't been tested doesn't mean that all the compounds that are in the ingredient list haven't been either. Those products listed as cruelty free are the ones that use the ingredients that have been FDA approved through previous tests on both whole animals and cell cultures. Trust me. I was a member of ALAAS and worked in a lab facility for two years.

Your child has allergies, possibly deadly serious and you have a choice between two products, either of which COULD trigger a reaction and kill him.

One was tested on animals and other ways, the other was only tested on a computer- you know, the same device that makes your life so easy when the foundational data is messed up.

Which do you choose?

I read PETA's standards for 'cruelty-free' pet foods- to be rated cruelty-free, the maker cannot do 'palatability tests', which means they cannot see if the dogs like to eat that brand. They can not do allergen tests, so the maker has to try to GUESS that the food does not trigger allergies in dogs.

I am fascinated that women are willing to apply make up near their eyes or lips that has not been tested to MAKE SURE that wearing it for extended periods does not do something bad to them. Considering all the chemicals in make up, this scares me.

Some things really don't need to be tested on live animals--they aren't too dangerous and you don't need to know that much about them (like a new mascara formula or a hand creme), but some things you would really want to know what the side effects in living things are. I am afraid animals are the natural choice because experimenting in people is illegal and even when they have been tested there are still unknown side effects and people can die and at the least sue (think Vioxx). People want it both ways: no animal testing and totally completely safe (or they sue and sue)--you just can't have it both ways. The living organism is a really complex system and you just can't predict how a drug for example will work without testing it.

No! Barely any products are tested on animals anymore, so I could find a better product that is not tested on animals! I also think it is extremely cruel.

I would rather know the product is tested and safe to use as I am quite sensitive and react to many things.......I also agree that testing on animals is vital in learning things... we used animals at university a lot...many were dead of course, but we did kill a rat to get its ovaries and test them with hormones...its was really interesting.

So many of these tests rely on actual tests. It is surprising how many more lives could be saved if the PETA Pukes would just mind their own business. It is surprising how they change their mind when they have a loved one needing research done on an animal. Would you rather let humans die, what kind of a person does that make you? Save a lab rat but let your mother suffer!!!!!!

Because people are sick. Half of the tests done on animals dont logically or anatomically apply to humans anyway.
