during the civil war?....what would Lincoln or the government at that time have done to a lawmaker who would have made that comment to the news papers back then?

Kelly4u2..what the heck difference does it make if its a civil war...ITS A WAR!!..we were losing 10,s of thousand in a battle! and it sounds like your assuming that we are losing this war...the only way we will lose this war is by the cowards in the dem party who VOTED FOR this war, and now want to pull the funding while we have troops being shot at...good grief!

You are awesome to have asked this question. This is a very compelling question, and it epitomizes the apparent lack of strength and true patriotism in today's society in comparison to society during the civil war. We have a generation of weak, wishy washy children posing as adults, and it's not a pretty sight.

Lincoln was the other president to suspend habeas corpus. See, he is like George.

Many people had different opinions during that time, particularly the South! Guess what, the 1st Amendment was part of the Constitution even back then, and lawmaker's are protected anyway from what they say!

The war is lost. The commanding general in Iraq currently has said there is no military solution. Who would have thought you would hear a general say that, but then there was MacArthur, a 5 star general, and Pres Truman!

YOU can't win the war militarily. Got it yet! Besides we won't support this war based on lies!

There were lots of those folks. The rioters in New York City had no interest in fighting Mr. Lincoln's War. Governors in states like Indiana were also not big fans of the war.

Lincoln himself began to wonder following Hooker's defeat at Chancellorsville.

Even McClellan was something of a defeatist and ran against Lincoln on an "end the war" ticket.

The difference then was that Lincoln's causes of restoring the Union and abolishing slavery were righteous causes.

Mr. Bush's adventure in Iraq is not a righteous cause and the patriotic American has an obligation to point that fact out to his fellow Americans.

Absolutely nothing. It's called free speech. Were you around during Vietnam? What Harry Reid said was mild compared to things you heard from our lawmakers, government officials and newspapers back then. It still stings their butts. They wouldn't even let Joan Baez perform at Walter Reid this week because of her anti-war stance and music during Vietnam. They couldn't stop her back then, but they still poke her with a stick when they get the chance now. What is it about free speech that torques up the right wingers so much? It seems like it's only okay when they agree with what's being said.

Well, that's kind of a dumb question considering the Civil War was a CIVIL WAR!!!!

Besides that, the civil war wasn't lost, so therefore it would be a dumb thing to say.

Compare the other wars this country was involved in with this one and then tell me exactly why we are even at war. A war which the congress of this United States did NOT approve of.

PS A lot of you speak of being "patriotic" or a "loyal American". A loyal American cares about this country and the people in it. A loyal American is not one that gives his government total power. A loyal American is one who stands up and says If we're going to war, then it's for a good reason. And Mr. President, you can't even get your reason straight...

Hey Einstein - That civil war happened in this country people were getting killed here for freedom, not in some foreign country for personal profit for only the elitest few.

Too bad for Lincoln he had that pesky constitution in the way. Then he could have hung the suckers. Almost 150 years later and that constitution is still giving the republicans problems. When are you guys just gonna abolish it?

Harry Reid should resign for saying the war is lost

Probably nothing. Several did say such things, and I don't believe any were tried for treason.

Nothing. Unlike todays Republicans, Lincoln didn't regard the Constittution and the Bill of Rights as "just a peice of paper."

But then, Lincoln was a loyal American, so obviously he'd react differently than today's neocons.
