John Elway, and I tell you why....how can a guy be the third all time most fumbling player in NFL history, and still produce the wins that this man did, he's the greatest ever becuse he overcame his mistakes. When things went poorly for his team, he stepped up and made the plays needed to win, I'm a Charger fan and spent years hating Elway with a passion, I don't know if he will be the greatest of all time but I suspect he will be the greatest of my lifetime.

BTW: here is the record for most fumbles:

Individual Records: Fumbles

Records updated through the 2005 season

FUMBLES
Most Fumbles, Career:
161 Warren Moon, Houston, 1984-1993; Minnesota, 1994-96; Seattle, 1997-98; Kansas City, 1999-2000

153 Dave Krieg, Seattle, 1980-1991; Kansas City, 1992-93; Detroit, 1994; Arizona, 1995; Chicago, 1996; Tennessee, 1997-98

137 John Elway, Denver, 1983-1998

Thats a tough question, I could name you a few. But I am going to have to go with Peyton Manning. I know, I know...hes only won 1 super bowl, but seriously...he is the smartest QB to play the game. He makes accurate throws, good decisions...he even calls audibles and dumby audibles. The guy picks his own plays...what QB do you know of anymore that does that?

He may not be the most athletic, or mobile QB, but hes definantly the smartest and has an amazing gun! Give him a few more seasons and he'll have even more records and some more super bowls under his belt!

Honorable Mentions:
Joe Montana
Brett Favre
Tom Brady
Terry Bradshaw
John Elway
Dan Marino
Steve Young
Johny Unitas
Bart Starr

I believe that Joe Montana was. Here are a few reasons why. First in SB XVI he took a team to the superbowl with a leading rushed of less than 700 yards. He went head to head in superbowls against two of the top four all time QBs (2-0). His team with him being important in both those games (John Elway and Dan Marino). Four Superbowl wins with three MVPs.

There are many guys who you can make a great arguement for, and many will. Joe is just the greatest in my opinion is all.

Brett Favre

He is the only 3 time MVP winner.
Won the super bowl
Went to super bowl
Near Breaking all passing Records including Yards and TDs
Near the winningest QB in NFL history ( needs 6 more wins)
Relied on minimum talent on offense ( with the exception of Stearling sharp and Mark Chamera (sp?)
Strongest arm in NFL history
Great leader
Great Teamate
Plays with more passion and heart then any other QB.
has record for most consecutive starts for a QB
Was not expected to play more then 5 years after the car accident that took out much of his intestens. ( going onto his 17th season)
Loyal ( playing with packers since being traded in 91 or 92)
his ability and courage to come out and say he was entering rehab. no QB would ever do that on their own will and he had the courage to do so.

The other QBs mentioned i would say they are great QBs but not the greatest

Montana had Rice to throw to and was on a great team. ( look what happend when he went to KC)

Elway was great but does not have th stats that favre has

Manning has a future HOF WR to throw to and has not yet come close to breaking Favres Records ( we will see in a few years)

aikeman was solid but again relied on the talent around him.

But Brett Favre in my opinion is the greatest QB to ever play.

Probably a toss up between John Elway and Joe Montana. They were both the greatest come from behind qbs of all time. But they both went to a ton of SuperBowls, Montana won more of them though. Being a 49er fan i would say Montana was the greatest QB of all time, but i wouldnt argue it to hard if someone said Elway.

'of all-time' probably throws some people off....For instance if Tom Brady accomplished nothing more and played in the 60's or 70' or even the 80's you would have everyone saying him.

I would like to think of QBs on different teams: Follow for a second:

*Marino gets snubbed for lack of playoff success.

*Montana gets snubbed because Ryan Leaf could have won a championship with Rice, Taylor, Lott, Coach, etc.

*Elway did a lot with a short list of tools.

*Bradshaw was playing with some sick defenses.

*Aikman is not even in the top ten...

*Favre did a lot with not too many weapons.

*I cannot imagine these quarterbacks winning championships TODAY on what appears to be just decent offensive Patriots teams. Especially with the types of defenses being played, freakish players, free agency, and parody.

Best at what?

Team leadership and field abilities? Marino or Bradshaw.

Hitting the long receiver? Elway or Namath.

Winning a come-from-behind game (especially one that counts)? Montana.

Longevity? Moon.

Short-sighted, modern popularity (but with a lot of talent and a bright future)? Manning.

Determined, demanding punishment and sacrifice on behalf of his team? Unitas.

Scrambling? Vick.

Solid combination of several of these categories: Bob Griese

It is hard to determine the "best" when everyone looks for something different.

Manning by far. The smartest QB ever, they way hes audibles at the line then throws a laser pass for a TD is just amazing. Then he walks right off the field like its another day on the job no boosting or bragging a real class act.

Johnny Unitas.

The only reason other QBs broke his records and his numbers now don't impress is because when he played seasons were only 12 games.

47 consecutives games throwing a TD pass is the equivalent to Joe Dimaggio's.

Finally, he didn't win any Super Bowls because when the SB was created, he was past of his prime.
