I use three free antispyware program that are excellent and keep me free of spyware.
Superantispyware, is well known to find spyware missed by all other. Download their free version: http://www.superantispyware.com
A2Squared Malware from Austria. Download their free version http://www.emsisoft.com Excellent in protecting you from worms, spyware, rogue, cookies, keyloggers, malware and trace spyware.
AdAware Se Personal out of Sweden. This company has been around since pc became commercial. They only specialize in antispyware. http://www.lavasoft.com
You need all three as with spyware one will always find what the the others miss.
Only run one antivirus program or you will have serious conflict with your system.

No one spyware program is a complete solution. I use a combination of Spybot - Search & Destroy and Lavasoft Ad-Aware. You really do need both of them. Run either one then run the other and you will find that there is always something leftover by the first one that the second one catches. They search in different ways and have different strengths. Spybot can also block spyware, in addition to removing it. I believe that Ad-Aware only does this in the paid version.
And don't forget a good antivirus program as part of your protection plan - I like AVG by Grisoft. All three of these programs have free versions available.

Truth be told, I use both Ad Aware and Spy Bot. When I run them, they both find different things. I also have Avast anti-virus. All three of these programs are free. So is Spyware Blaster. It actually keeps some of the spyware off your computer to start with. By using Mozilla Firefox as your browser, you pick up much less spyware as well. Yep, it's free, too.
If you're going to use Spy Bot, be sure to get the one that says "Spy Bot Search and Destroy." There's another one out there with a similar name. It lets you run the check for free, then charges a fee to remove whatever it finds! That's not the Spy Bot I have. Choose the one that says "Search and Destroy;" that's the real free one.

Spyware Doctor is by far the best. Only downside is they have some serious customer service issues. If you have anything wrong with it that a four year old couldn't fix, you're pretty much S.O.L. 'cause they can't help you most of the time.

That is a very good question. I think each of them catch a different set of spyware depending on how often they update and how clever the programmers are.
Try all of them free for 30 days and see which does the job for you.
