It went down at 3rd floor and hasn't been seen again. Would a magnet work on silver?

A magnet will not work, try a plumbers chain with several small fish hooks attached, but before you do that, just take the grill off and reach down, as the pipes often have a 90 degree bend just after they open at the grill. If that is the case, you could snag it with your fingertips and retrieve the chain.

No, silver and gold have no iron so a magnet won't work. Are the ducts in between the floor and ceiling below? Does the duct go straight down to the basement? I would go to a home
improvement store [ Lowe's, Home Depot ] and ask the older guys there. They have been asked all kinds of questions!
[ Make sure you have vent covers for all the vents before you do operation 'rescue necklace' .]

If your house has a crawl space and it happened on the bottom floor. You can go under the house open the duct usually flex is connected to the tin vent. Then put the flex back together and tape it up with duct tape.

straighten a coat hanger and put a hook in it at the end. You may need a few tries, but it will grab it eventually. Also the hanger will work around a corner if needed.

If further down, use some fishing line, put a 1/4 ounce weight on top of a treble hook, fish this down and pull up your necklace. Good luck.

Either grab a big magnet (though, who has one of those just lying around). Or, you could try vacuuming it out. I know, this will be messy to retrieve, but if you have a bagless, it won't be too bad. It may be difficult to take the ducts apart/replace, but you could, depending on the design of your house. Best of luck.

sure. decrease it open with a metallic cuttoff wheel. verify the cuts are instantly. purely decrease 3 aspects of a sq. and bend it down. Get your necklace. Push the flap lower back up and weld it or use metallic tape. Its a metallic version of duct tape and its bought at any enormous ironmongery keep.

You could use a wirewith a hock at the end...or metal coat hanger...If you have metal ductwork then there is no problem of damage but if you have flex be carefull not to damage the duckwork..or go to the basement or crawel space and disconnect the duckwork, retreve the necklace, then re-connect the duckwork...good luck

You can remove the duct cover and be prepared with a wire hanger or a pair of tongs to try to retrieve it. Good luck!

There are companies that do nothing but clean vents - dryers, heating, cooling, fireplace vents. If the necklace means enough to you to spend some $$, I really suggest a vent professional.

If you can see the nickel. Get a long enough rod to reach the nickel, put two way tape on it, and try to see if you can get the nickel to stick on the end of it. The 3M Stronghold gray tape. This tape is really strong!
