99 Ford Escort.. 4 door. The brake lights stay on, even with the keys out of the ignition. Cant even imagine where to start. Has anyone had this problem before?

Rear brake lights?
There is a push button switch near the top of the brake pedal under the dash that may have slipped around a little.

It activates when the pedal moves away from it.

It may be a simple adjustment.

If you are not able to do anything for now, pull the brake lights fuse so your battery doesn't go dead.
Just don't drive any where. If someone rearends you, you will be sued.

The switch it's self is pretty cheap. Maybe 10 bucks. and easy to replace.
Just unplug it, remove the plastic nut, and slide it out.

To add to the other posts, you might also check ALL fuses. A fuse unrelated to the brake lights can cause a feedback to the brakelights. I had that problem on a Pontiac once where the radio fuse was blown and the brakelights stayed on until I replaced the radio fuse. Weird stuff happens in automotive one wire /ground systems.

If you mean the brake light on the instrument panel it's probably just low brake fluid.

If you mean the brake lights on the rear of the vehicle, it's probably the brake switch.

Maybe your brake pedal is sticking a little. Try lifting up on it with your foot or hand and see if it goes out. Might just need a slight adjustment.

melted wire somewhere maybe.. if you look in under your brake pedal there is a plugin, and a button.. the button gets hit when you push your brakes.. if you bumped the plugin, it may have unplugged a little bit and shorted out.
otherwise maybe its just tail lights and not brake lights?
