specifically i have a memorex. i can open the bottom of it and see some internals but cannot take off the top. does anyone have a tutuorial on how to do this as i cannot find one damn one on the entire internets.

where in here did i say i need to clean it? please tell me. I need to get to the optic laser for a different reason.

One possibility is that the portion you can't open is specifically glued shut so that if you open it and get a laser beam shot at your eye you can't get a lawyer to sue them claiming that it just popped open.

If you don't see anything that looks like a set of screws holding the top then you will need to use a fine saw (like a jewelers saw or a skinny Dremel saw) to cut around the outside edge until it gets loose.

I would suggest you try to get a defunct CD drive and practice your opening skills on that. They should be available on old cheapo computers or on ebay or on freecycle.

They're usually difficult to open. Look for lots of tiny phillips screws on the sides and back holding the top lid closed, not to mention the warranty label that you will need to break.
when you finally take the top off, blow the dust out of the drive and carefully brush the tiny round lens with a fine camel hair brush. Reassemble and pray.

They're not built to be opened that way. If you want to clean it, get a cleaning disk.
