I recently found a painted turtle in my pool in my backyard. We called a guy that we know personally from the Humane Society and he said that we should probably let it go but it will most likely die. so we decided to keep him and he said thats alright too. So, he's about the size of a quarter and he is ah-dorable....i assume he is a baby and the guy said that he probably was laid by his mother and traveled to the wrong spot because we have a pond at the bottom of our neighborhood in a culdisac. so anyways, we have had him for 3 days now and we got him a mini tank (traveling tank) for the time being. we bought him some turtle pellets but he hasnt eaten as far as we know. he hasnt eaten the lettuce we put out either. so all i need is a list of what to get him and a quick description. long answers are appreciated just as much though. especially...do i need a heat lamp or a water heater for him and how can i keep him warm until i get either of the two??

kelsey,

I have 2 turtles and I´ve had them for a long time....

Put them in a fish tank with heated water. I have them in a 40liters tank, i just have 20 liters of heated water. the temperature... about 28-to 30 degrees celcius. You can change the water every week, use a filter (I use a stingray #5). And I put a calcium turtle every two weeks.

Feed the turtle with turtle pellets, it usually takes a while before they start to eat them.

In the fish tank place a rock or stone or a piece of wood so the turtle can breath, every now and then, take the turtle out for sun, use your traveling tank (so it doesn´t run away) with some water.

My turtles were as small as a quarter, now they are as big a soda can.

hope this helps

This has been a issue for thousands of years. The dirt turtles do not fit in with map turtles because the map turtles sense like they are better over dirt turtles and painted turtles. The map turtles even went so a thoughts as to take over dirt turtles for jobs the map turtles did not opt to do. The painted turtles were very unique turtles to the island they got here from yet even as the map turtles arrived, the map turtles compelled the painted turtles to the different side of the island. Map turtles nonetheless have a despise of all different kinds of turtles besides the indisputable fact that the dirt turtles and painted turtles favor revenge on the map turtles for what they have performed. So no, they maximum in all probability gained't get alongside.

1. Let it go. The guy you spoke to was absolutely wrong. Wild caught babies do very well in the wild and very badly in captivity.

2. If you keep it, you will need:
- Information. Try http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/caresheet-eastern_painted.htm
- 20 gallon long tank
- External filter designed for a 60 gallon tank
- Water heater that can keep the tank 75-80F all the time
- Turtle log, dock, or ramp
- Basking light to keep the basking site at 90F
- Timer for the light
- Thermometer
- Siphon cleaner system

Your turtle is not eating because the tank is too small, and probably too cold, and more importantly, it is in shock from being penned up. (Besides, they don't eat lettuce as babies.)

Please let it go!

I also have a baby turtle and i give him little pellets i only give him one a day and he eats it when it gets soft enough in the water but if you give him too much food it will get gooey and smell very bad make sure he has rocks and a heater helps but if he is near a window it works just as well i also have a leopard gecko and he doesn't like his lamp when he has it he is aggressive and irritable so lamps are not needed but if you hold them for extended periods of time he can die if he has no light or window b/c he cant make vitamin d but that's about it.
