Different societies and countries actually define 'working hard' differently. A person in a developing nation would definitely equate acquiring education as the means of scaling the social ladder. However, in a high functioning society elsewhere, education for people is no longer a privilege but a pre-requisite. An improvement in a person's social standing is only achievable by the amount of material wealth you have attained.

China is a unique example of a developing nation where its people compromise on literacy rate and education to acquire improvement in their social standing. Rural farmers willingly give up the pursuit of knowledge to take up factory jobs in the city. It's pretty ironic because the Chinese society's prospering while its literacy rate plummets.
