If the key goes in a slot on the dash, it could be that the slot ring on the dash does not line up with slot in the ignition cylinder for some reason...on older cars, I've seen this happen where the chrome piece where you put the key into rotates slightly and doesn't line up with the actual cylinder behind it especially if the cylinder is loose from age. Unless the key is the wrong one for some reason...did they give you more than two keys for the car---one is ignition and one is for doors and trunk and have different grooves. You may have to remove the ignition cylinder by unscrewing the bezel around the ignition cylinder and replacing it or have a locksmith inspect it.
Hope this helps, Paul

A 1957 Chevy?

The only suggestion I have is make sure that it is in park, or in Neutral before you insert the key. . .

you probably ended up with the trunk or door key, not the ignition key. or the keyway is blocked, broken, i have had a truck that i had to replace that in because the little clips inside let go.

in that era they had a separate key for the trunk and doors.
