unlike the US, many countries are not exclusively capitalistic - their socialistic policies allow support of free medicine and education, based on taxing the people at a reasonable rate. Also these coutnries do not involve themselves in stupid and expensive wars, neither do they consume vast amounts of world resources per capita.

Yes in countries with universal social services such as health and education, the taxes will be higher.
In Canada, everybody has the same health coverage, except for dental and prescription.
No free college.
Our taxes are slightly higher than the US, but not a lot.
You can argue that wait times are longer and they are. But at least everybody will be taken care of.
Also, just like the US, if you have the bucks, I can go anywhere in the US, Mexico, China, India and get treated fast.
The previous responders need to learn a new word "ethnocentric" do a google on it.

Well in Ireland I pay taxes of 20% on the first 30,000 euros/40,750 dollars, and for that I get my college fees paid for in full, and my health care.
Scott742: 30 year old students can't stay forever, you get your qualification paid for up to doctorate level once ie. if I failed year 2, I'd have to pay my fees to repeat year 2, but not for year 3. Also, um, not enslaved? How the hell are we enslaved??

It's called socialism. It doesn't really work, unless you like to wait in line for months to have your operations, or sit in class with 30-year-old students who never want to graduate college because it doesn't cost anything to stay. It sounds cool, but it's not really good, and it costs a bundle in taxes. And, all the taxes turn the economy sour, and eventually everyone is poor. That's why they're rioting in France.
But you're welcome to try it out if you want. Just do it in France, please. Some of us still like living in a free country. That's free, as in not enslaved...not free, as in free lunch.
