You might want to try workshops around the community, or submit to a literary agent.

Usually your local library will have a 'Writer's Market' for the current year where you may be able to find literary agents that will be able to handle your book.

Too, you might look out for small publishers who allow unsolicited(i.e. unagented material) manuscripts....

Another avenue is to write short stories, and try to build up your name then, while you're trying to get your novel out there...

Good luck!

Do you have a finished manuscript? If not, finish a manuscript because you need to at least show yourself and any potential publishers that you can finish a large project like writing a book.

Once you have a completed manuscript, one that has been critiqued by others and you have revised, you should attend as many conferences as you can, especially ones that are in your genre. At conferences you can network, meet agents and publishers, etc. Join a local writing group where you can also network. Do not underestimate the value of networking.

Write a query letter and start sending it out to agents. (Eric Maisel has written a great book on query letters. Highly recommended by published writers.) You can have a fabulous manuscript in your hands but with a lousy query letter your manuscript will stay there--in your hands.

There are a few steps. At least a few to start with.

First you have to prepare yourself mentally. It's a long, tough road filled with rejections. Once you convince yourself you are determined enough to take all of the "no thank you," then you look through Writer's Digest annual book and search for either agents or small publishers. An agent is for big publishing houses.

Buy a copy of The Writer's Market. It lists the names and contact information for Literary Agencies and Publishers.

First you must go to a lawyer to sign a document so your novel has a copyright, be careful with plagiarism. Later find places who can edit your story in case of any errors and some lines that doesn't make any sense. Later if everything is ready. Go to a publication company and the rest is up to them, so soon everybody can read your story.
