My rent was $1700 a month, the management company raise the rent to $2200 a month. We are on a month to month lease, is this raise legal. Isn't there a law liminting the amount of rent raise in one month. Two weeks ago a worker came to our apartment and to checked it out, she emphasized that she wasn't going to raise our rent... Any thing I can do? Oh yea, living in California.

Depends upon the laws of your state / municipality.
Here, you can raise the rent to "market levels". So if someone will pay $2200 where you live,... that is the "market level". If the market level is $1800 then it might be illegal. If there was a recent renovation, $2200 might be justified. Go to your town hall and ask what the rules are and ask who can advise you on how rent rates are enforced.

Good luck

Your month to month rent gives you no latitude to fight this kind of rent increase. Talk to a local realtor and find a new place to live. get a lease of some kind and you won't have this problem. In california there is a group that addresses rental rights and their services are free. I am sorry that I can't remember the name of the group but if you walk into any Real Estate office they will know and give you all the pertinent info. I am a landlord... $500 really seems a bit much. they might just be trying to get rid of you. a standard practice with month to month tennants. sorry about your problem and good luck.

once you've a lease that states that and evidence that her letter got here previous due, then it would seem so that you could have the right to employ on the inexpensive. i'd ask them and note what they ought to assert or deliver them a registered/go back receipt letter for evidence and ask for a written answer. they have damaged the lease or are trying to. The date on the letter would not count number, it really is the postmark. it really is her mission to inform you and so, my wager is, she necessary to deliver the letter in a extra well timed way. do not let them buffalo you. A lease is a binding contract for both activities. the purely challenge i'd have is not any matter if a lease can without delay renew. purely because both of you signal a paper, no matter if it really is not criminal, it really is not valid in a court docket of regulation. in case you pull it off, you'd be getting a letter from them right here 3 hundred and sixty 5 days.
