first thing is to decide how you are going to use it. If you are going to use it as basic transportation, then a small truck is for you. but, if you are going to use it to haul things around, then you might want to get a mid-size or larger truck. if you are wanting to also carry more than 2 passengers, then i'd opt for a 4 door. are you going to stay on the road or go off road? this means 4x2 or 4x4. are you going to pull anything with it? then you should have either the v6 or v8 engines. are you confortable with a stick shift or an automatic? mainly your preference here. same as to whether it will be gas or diesel. there are many different brands out there for you to choose from. all have their pluses and minuses. i prefer dodge. mine is a 2001 dodge dakota quad cab slt 4x4 with a 4.7l v8 and a automatic transmission. i get in the range of 16 to 22 mpg depending on how i drive it. plus, i get to carry more than 2 passengers since it is a four door truck. i prefer trucks to cars. i'm more comfortable in a truck than a car (i'm 6'3" tall). and a big bonus is that i can take it to my favorite fishing spot without any trouble at all.

Depends on what you intend to do.

Heavy - duty towing: 3/4 ton or 1 ton with a diesel

Daily driver: 1/2 ton.

But I'd say it is up to your brand loyalties.
