what is some good kind of paper for a home-made kite
(i'm not cheap it's for a school project)

Rice paper. It is light weight and catches the wind like crazy.
Also this time of year you can get bamboo used for staking plants quite easily .
Do you have a local oriental food market?

A friends son used this site for hes project thing worked good
he used nylon from walmart and a hot iron to seal the edge so it would not Frey

wax paper I believe is good. Or you can get straws and thread them together forming a 3-d box add a tail and string to hold.....I always enjoyed making those!
