I have been renting a guest cottage for 8 years. The landlord told me 5 years ago that he was going to displace me when he finished redoing the garage and he finally finished. He & his pregnant wife came to me in February and said they would be moving into my house in June and they had to pay a relocation fee of 3300. In March he told me that July 1st would be the move-out date. I like them and love the house.

In April the LA City Council changed the relocation fee to 9040! I called the office and they said there was no 60day notice on file so technically the landlord hasn't notified me, and when he files they'll set the rate at 9040. My landlord said he's expecting to pay me 3300 since they told me in February, and they're just being nice by letting me stay until July. He said the 9040 would break his bank and disrupt all of his plans. He offered me an extra 300.
I don't want to leave, and I want that 9040, but I feel guilty dinging them on a technicality. What should I do?

Unless you have a lease, you are renting month to month. In most areas either party can end a month to month rental with 30 days notice and ZERO relocation fee. I won't consider myself lucky to get the $3300.
