...price is what percent greater than the original price of the jacket?

7 answers

a.

For simplicity, lets say the jacket was $100. (p = 100) The starting point does not matter.

1) increase 40%: p + p X 40% = 100 + 100 X 40% = 100 + 40 = $140

2) decrease by 20%: $140 - 140 X 20% = $140 - 28 = $112

3) calculate the final increase: $112/$100 - 1 = 1.12 - 1 = .12 ...or 12%

The answer is "a."

When the store raises the price 40%, then the new price is 1.40 times the old price (100% + 40% = 140% = 1.40 in decimal form).

Now, when they take a reduction, they take it on the new price, not the original price. So, if they reduce that by 20%, then that means purchasers will pay 80% of the price marked up 40% from the original price. This is how you would figure the final price of the jacket:

Let P(f) be the final price and P(o) be the original price. Then

P(f) = 0.80[1.4 P(o)] = (0.80)(1.40)[P(o)] = 1.12 [P(o)].

In other words, the final price is 12% higher than the original price

You can do this by plugging in numbers...

If the jacket was originally $10 and the store added 40%, the new price would be $14. If they then deducted 20% from this new, higher price they would deduct $2.80 and the new price would be $11.20 - 12% higher than the original price.

This works for any numbers you plug in.

The 'trick' to the question is that the answer is not 20% (adding 40% and then substracting 20) because you are not deducting 20% from the original price but from the new, higher price.

a) 12%

for example, the price was 100, increased by 40% will become 140
then decreased by 20 percent (20$ of 140 is 28) so 140-28=112
12 is extra on the orignial price!! so tht means 12% !!
or u can say 12/100 = .12 thts 12 %

The price would lose half of the increase: Example

$50 dollar item increased by 40% {add $20} = $70

$50 dollar item deducted by 20% {substract $10} = $40

solve by example...

lets say the coat was $100
price raised by 40%; now it's $140
price lowered by 20%
(20% of 140 is 28)
Now its $112

$112 is 12% higher than $100
