Better quality CRT tube monitors have the front face flat to minimize distortion. That doesn't make them light or compact, just easier to view. They use an electron beam to light up phosphors on the inner surface of the tube.

A flatpanel monitor uses an array of LCDs or a plasma screen to make an image within a non-bulky panel that is only a few inches deep and is not very heavy to transport. It is completely different solidstate technology with a backlight not an electron beam to light it up.

Yes, flatscreen just means that the screen itself is flat...flatpanel means that the whole monitor is thin (like a plasma or lcd tv). So, flatscreen can still be a bulky monitor.
