A Kia in general is a piece of trash, so I'd buy something other than a Kia in the first place.
But yes, the engine will be damaged if the timing belt breaks, due to the cylinders will make contact with the valves and bend them or break them. That's why if you follow the maintenance schedule it recommends having the timing belt replaced after 60,000 miles or somewhere in that range.

Well to inspect the timing-belt you need to remove the plastic engine cover and then the timing cover on the side of the motor witch is plastic as well. You need to make sure its the timing-belt or just a alternator belt with a bad or locked up alternator? If it is the timing belt going 30 mph you should be ok it takes a lot to bend valves in most interference motors. If the motor is shot then get one from a junk yard much much cheaper. However you either have a bad alternator or a broken timing belt. I have seen the alternators lock up on these motors just a place to check. yes it is a interference motor witch means you may need a water pump and the belt witch is a days worth of work and a few hundred dollars.

a lot of the KIA 4 cyl engine's were clearance engine's meaning the cylinder will not smack a valve when the belt brakes any mechanic can tell you for sure by looking in his stock of repair info software(if it is a reputable shop)that's how i found out my KIA Rio was o.k. and i just replaced the belt and as far as being a junk car I'm not so sure we put 378,000km on it before it was totalled in a collision and it was still running strong up until that point with ever only having regular maintenance, good luck.

Depends on what happened when it broke. Only way is to take the cylinder head off and see if any valves got bent, or hit anything... Even then it doesn't mean your whole engine is trashed.

Very Likely, as this is what is know as an interference motor. That is Why it is very important to change every 50 or 60 thousand miles or so, before it breaks.

if the timing belt breaks, then on most cars and trucks, its a ***** to replace. you have to in some lift the engine, take it apart, just to replace it. so take it to a garage, and have them check it out and hopefully yours isnt that bad.
