The gravel is decorative rocks? Nothing..
but having large rocks or any other rocks for that fact..will make it hard for the beta to find the eggs and put it on the bubbles the dad worked so hard on blowing

It makes the water harder to keep clean, for one thing. When bettas spawn, the female lays the eggs in the water and they sink. The male has to find them and pick them up to put them in the bubble nest. If they stay in the gravel, they won't develop properly. That's why the bottom of the tank should be bare. The most I've ever put in a spawning tank is a group of plants held in place by the bendable plant anchors so the female would have a place to hide.

You can find out more about the kind of tank setup bettas need for spawning at this website: http://www.bettatalk.com/

Eggs will likely fall between the rocks and the male can not retrive and return to nest and eggs will go bad. Shallow/Bare bottom is best. ><>:)
