You have McCain and Guiliani trying to equate themselves to Reagan and being a real conservative. McCain had the gall to think we were too stupid to remember he was behind the Gang of 14, yet he will appoint originalist judges. You have Guiliani who is liberal on abortion, amongst many issues.

It seems that there is the liberal/pandering wing that these two are part of, along with Huckabee, Brownback, Thompson.

Did you notice this? What are other examples that you noted? Is this the showdown as to why the base is so fed up?

I saw a lot of not enforcing the borders, not for real tax reform (though Tancredo, Gilmore, and Hunter were on with the Fair Tax).

Do these candidates not understand what the base really wants?

There are two kinds of Republicans.

1. Those who believe and act on traditional party views.

2. Those who pick and choose.

Being a real Republican is not a buffet.

I saw the same things I think Reagan would just shake his head at most of their answers. You would think a few of them would know. With today's government out of control I really don't see any true conservatives out there. At the least though any of these guys would be better then any of the libs running (I hope).

I realize that sometimes a platform is only a formalizing of the issues of the successful candidate. The process does not presuppose a given set of issues. They are derived from working them. The candidates are meeting the base as they travel. The base gets its say first, then it gets built on. No building no votes.

The problem is that the republican party has splintered into to many factions. Fiscal conservatives, christian conservatives, social conservatives, family value conservatives. You guys are destroying yourselves from within. What ever happened to good old Barry Goldwater conservatives? Smaller, less intrusive government conservatives? I found Ron Paul to be right on in his insistence on adhering to the constitution.

Huh? What does his membership in the Gang of 14 have to do with why McCain cannot be taken seriously?

I didn't listen to much of the debate, and while I was listening I only wanted to hear one of them say that Bush v. Gore was a major embarrassment.

And, btw, here's one for you:

They have to do this. Independent or undecided voters historically turn the tide in favor of one candidate or another. Not the party base.

Sometimes it looks that way. I'm not that conservative on social issues, my main problem with Rudy is his personal baggage.

Well, "the base" you are referring to got exactly what it wanted the last two elections - and look what happened.

"The base" is in for a big surprise this time - and for quite a few after.....There won't be a Republican in the White House for a LOOOOONG time.

And "the base" is in for another surprise when the next round of elections for the Congress seats come up...Their refusal to sign the bill for troop removal is going to bite them in the rear. They haven't been listening to "we, the people" - inspite of losing so many seats last November.

Would you rather have a democrat, hillary being first and foremost? I would just vote for whoever the republican candidate is!
