Dodge City, Kansas
Circa 1876
Matt Dillon, U.S. Marshal, knew only too well the ups and downs of a relationship. He had been "seeing" Miss Kitty Russell for 20 years. Then one day, Sunshine MacGillicutty entered Dodge City....and his life. Only (4.) once in a lifetime did a love like this come along. (2.) On a wing and a prayer he had broken off his relationship with Kitty in pursuit of Sunshine....or as he fondly called her, "SunnyMac."
Kitty had taken the news badly. Like a small ship on an angry ocean, she was sinking fast! Most days she could be found with a bottle of Randy Scouse Git Rotgut in one hand and a Cuban cigar in the other. Yep, she was sinking alright......it grieved Matt to see his former flame in such condition. He wished her no harm.
He had never really been the man she had wanted him to be. This made it especially difficult for Kitty, because Matt had been transformed into a romance novel lothario once he hooked up with Sunshine. On a GOOD day, Matt would give Kitty a quick hug, a stolen kiss, maybe two. He had always told her that his job came first. With Sunshine, all the rules had changed. Matt always seemed to be touching her......whether he was walking her across the street or having a meal at Delmonico's, there was constant contact. Before she came along, Matt slept in a crummy little cot in his office. Now he had taken up residence at her little farm just outside of town. Kitty could often be heard these days, asking no one in particular, (3.) "Who wrote the book of love?"
As Matt stood alone, leaning against the front door of his office, he got to thinking about just how precious and short, life really is. He decided to lay aside his work for the day. He fixed up a picnic basket and rode out to the farm ...to his Sunny. He didn't need to convince her that a short break was in order. She was all for it! They rode their horses down to the lake and found a nice spot to sit and sup. Sunshine watched as he carefully laid things out. Matt looked at her with an expression that bespoke his deep feelings of devotion.....(5) Matt: " A jug of wine, a loaf of bread and thou." He raised his glass for a toast.....(1.) "Till death do us part, SunnyMac." She smiled at him with tears in her eyes......"I'll drink to that."

I always thought when I got married it would be true to the vows... "Till death do us part!" Now, I sit with a jug of wine, a loaf of bread and thou wilst not commit to another marriage again... unless on a wing and a prayer it happens to be that once in a life time feeling I had 15 years ago with the person I let get away. If it does happen with this person, I would run through the streets naked singing "who wrote the book of love!!!" at the top of my lungs!

Once in a lifetime can you share a jug of wine,a loaf of bread and thou. Some people can only do it on a wing and a prayer. You really have to wonder Who wrote the book that said we had to just stay married Till death do us part.

"Who wrote the book" "On a wing and a prayer"? I read it years ago and can not remember the author. It is a story about a young couple that get married, and the fun really begins with the "Till death do us part". As I remeber they were given a "Once in a lifetime" reception. Following their honeymoon they set out on their future "on a wing and a prayer", only accompanied by "A jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou".

Who wrote The Book of Love,
Saying `Til Death do us part
Who soared on a wing and a prayer,
And flew with the Beating Heart.
Who thought that once in a lifetime
They could be better than they are now.
Who loved themselves to live with
A Jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou............Buzzard

Hector Donovan sat in the chair and picked up the Bible that was sitting on the bedside table. He opened it and softly began to read to Betty, whom he has been married to for more than fifty years. Mrs. Morgan, the other occupant in the room was already sleeping, not that it really mattered, as both ladies were affected with Alzheimer’s and usually didn’t respond to any sort of stimuli. They have shared a room now for several months at the Golden Garden Acute Care facility. It wasn’t a fancy or modern facility, nor was it in a nice part of town, but it was all Hector could afford. He often wondered how the facility came to be called Golden Garden as the “garden” only consisted of one big Pepper tree, centered in the middle of a small courtyard, with some shoddy plastic chairs placed around it. Hector didn’t like having Betty here, but his health too, was failing, and Betty required constant care because of her limitations. He had tried to keep her at home for as long as he could, but her sweet personality was replaced with a violent one that was hard to control. Now that she was in the final stages of the disease, and having trouble swallowing, it was only a matter of time till death do us part, would become a reality.
He closed the Bible and sat it back down on the table. Betty was having a rough night and was moaning and tossing in her sleep. Her breathing was raspy and irregular, and he considered calling the night nurse, but knew there wasn’t anything that could actually be done. Silently he hoped that her suffering would soon be over, and wondered why something like this would happen to anyone. He knew there would be no comin’ in on a wing and a prayer for either of the women in this room.
Hector figured once in a lifetime he was lucky enough to find love. He wondered who wrote the book regarding love and devotion, but then guessed it didn’t really matter, as he knew he had made a commitment to her, to love, honor and cherish, in sickness and in health, and he was bound to keep it. He could still her say “a jug of wine, a loaf of bread and thou” and then laugh hysterically as she ran barefoot through the meadow on their first date, so many years ago. Now that young vibrant girl was replaced with an old sick woman, who didn’t even know who he was, but there was no turning back as his heart had been captured by her, and he would stay by her side until the bitter end.
