Go to tools menu> then internet options and then the last tab
(Advanced) scroll down the list to multimedia and make sure theres a tick next to (play sounds)
or else choose reset near the end of the screen

Hope this helps

but may be problem with speakers? do CD's and DVD's play?

if not go to start>control panel>sounds, speech and audio devices and adjust system volume (make sure mute is not ticked)

I know when this happens to me, I have to go to My Computer and reset the MUTE button. It somehow gets pushed occasionally and then I can't hear anything.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
