I agree completely with you. The Mayans weren't the only ones who predicted. Merlin the wild also predicted the world would end in 2012. This other lady predicted "When the London River runs red etc." The Hopi indians also predicted in 2012 too! Those are old so some people don't think it's true. A computer program which goes around cyberspace that predicted the twin towers were going to collaspe, said that something horrible's going to happen that day. There was a 2 hour premiere of how the worlds to end that day on history channel.

YES... In fact, I first heard about this some 10 or 12 years ago... I thought everyone knew about it but from some of the other answers I would guess it is new to the pre-teen crowd.
The date, 23 Dec. 2012 is the day the Mayan Calendar ends the current cycle. It was first deciphered and computed back at the end of the 19th Century... and there is as much of a argument FOR the world ending on that day as there is a good argument for in NOT ending on that day.
You can see the Mayan Calendar, it is on permanent display at the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City.

i know that myth but its not true.
the evidence for this claim is that the mayan calendar ends BUT the mayan calendar is cyclic like our own (just that it spans multiple years rather than just 1), so when it ends it just starts over at the beginning. kind of like december 31 to january 1.
also nobody really knows whether 2012 is the correct date for it to end. that was just a rough geustimate by archeologists. theres no real way to know if that corresponds exactly. it could be several years off.

Yes, I did know. While I believe that at the time the Mayans created the calendar which ends on that date they were probably correct. I also believe the method by which their calendar was calculated is not stable, therefore rendering the date incorrect. The earth has experienced slight polar shifts since then.

The calender simply ends on that date. It does not mean that they have predicted the end of the world. The calender on your computer probably only goes up to 2099. That doesn't mean Microsoft knows some sort of big secret.

Yes I did thank you.
I don't see why we should any more credence to this "end time" prediction than any of the others that have come and gone in the past - however, if I'm wrong, none of us will be here to say "I told you so" anyway - so I can't lose !
Ooooooh - it was all on The History Channel, so it must be right !
