I'm at the end of my rope. I need clarity. I'm not rich so I can't run off to a theraputic spa, or camp. I have tried almost everything -meds, therapy, books, the religious approach is NOT for me. I'm in the biggest rut of my life. I'm a smart, creative person and have had great success in my life-my kids are all in mid teens or older. I need to find a purpose. I need to breathe. I need to know what I can do with my life. I just am all out of energy and ideas.

So take a Bromo and go to bed.
It won't give you energy or any ideas, but the point is ........you simply need an old fashioned holiday.
Rejuvenation comes when the mind and body are replenished. Who says you need money to holiday in your own backyard.
You say religion is NOT for you. How do you know you aren't meant for the Christ?
A purpose could be in your own backyard darlin. There is a book called "Acres of Diamonds" that can help you find what you want. It won't give it to you, but a direction could be steered with it's guidance.
Have you tried crying? I know a sweet little six year old that is adamant about it's curing effects. For anything, and sometimes I think the child is right.
Anyways, you cannot escape life. Sorry but as long as you are alive you cannot escape it.
Getting your head on straight is another matter altogether. So tie a knot at the end of the rope and hang on darlin.
At some point while you're hanging on your intelligent creativity will kick into gear and lo! An answer comes unbidden.
I hope the best for you.

Get in your car and sing this going 70 MPH:

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray (I would pray)

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed I could break away

[Chorus:]
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway

Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away (I will)
And breakaway

[Chorus]

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging around revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway

I'll spread my wings
And I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway, breakaway, breakaway

My "therapy" is to go to the park. Go out to your state park, or an arboretum or someplace in nature. Walk out into the park until you find a place that just takes your breath away, that makes your heart hurt to look at. Kneel down on the grass and look at the beauty around you and just *breathe*. Allow that peace and beauty to fill you up. If you meditate than meditate. If you do affirmations then say them to yourself while digging your fingers into the grass and breathing in the fresh air.
I know this may sound a little new agey but being in nature always gives me an incredible sense of peace. As women we run around a lot, taking care of the kids, family, working. I suspect that now that your kids are older and don't need you as much anymore, you are at a loss as to what to do with yourself.
As I said, get some peace. And then ask yourself--what can you do to help others? Can you work in a shelter? Can you volunteer in a hospital? Can you go back to college and fulfill a dream?
Find something that helps you to give back to your community and something that fulfills you personally.

Take care and good luck!

If you can't afford a vacation, go to a park and read, eat, do something that will bring you some relaxation. Also, find new hobbies. You say that you are creative, so you might want to work with that. Maybe you could volunteer and use your artisitc skills. Maybe start a new business or activity. Make baskets for sick children and donate them to hospitals. Do something creative for your children.

Try an online seach for groups that you might be interested in joining. Visit http://www.meetup.com/ and find people that share your same interests. You could coordinate a trip to the museum, etc.

Keep experiencing new things. Enjoy the simple things in life.

Maybe you should meet some more people like yourself and start some kind of group. Maybe a book club or sewing club, or something of that nature. If you did that, you would be able to reap the social benefits, as well as having something that will fill up your time and keep your life in balance.
