There is a slight possability that the car can pop out of gear. I lost a Jeep down a cliff at the desert because the transfercase popped into neutral. You can start the car in gear if you push the clutch in, or it has a neutral saftey switch cancel.

It is a safety precaution. Sure the transmission can hold the car in place but if something in the transmission were to fail the vehicle would roll away and then you'd have to answer to the police as to why you didn't have the emergency brake on.
Also, yes you can have the vehicle in first gear when starting. However, most cars now have a safety switch that requires the clutch pedal be depressed before the car will start.

It is always best to start a car in neutral - with the clutch pushed down - and the parking brake set. Most (if not all) cars have a clutch down switch that won't crank unless clutch is down. Start in neutral because sometimes the clutch doesn't release perfectly - especially if sitting for a long time (and cold) and the starter will have more stress to break loose the clutch plate. if you don't use the e-brake and you go to start - and are on a grade the vehicle will roll just as soon as you depress the clutch. another thing is that many of the rear brake systems - drum brakes mostly, are actually adjusted by use of the parking brake. if you never use it - the rear brakes go out of adjustment.

You put the parking brake to insure the car wont move. It can actually be pushed when in gear without the brake.
You can have the vehicle in first gear when starting the car as long as you step on the clutch at the same time.

Vehicles with manual transmissions have been
known to "jump" out of gear. Always put your
parking brake on or your emergency brake when
parking. Normally you can start the engine in
any gear as long as you have the clutch
engaged or pushed in.

you have to use the emergency brake when parking a car with a manuel transmission because there is no parking gear to put it in and yes it could roll off and hit something/someone and cause a big problem. and yes you can start a car in 1st gear but you must have the clutch depressed

putting the car in gear will allow it to stay put on some small grades but not on some biggers ones. as soon as the weight of the car gets more than the compression in the motor it will begin to roll.

technically, if left in gear it should hold.. however, myself, I would prefer to leave the strain on the brakes where it is meant to be rather than on the drive train.
just use the emergency/parking brake (whichever it's referred to now)
