They weren't.
There were a few shows like "Friday Night Videos", but for the most part MTV started the concept.

There was no such thing as a music video before MTV! I remember the first music video I saw -- I didn't know what it was! That was in the early 1980s...

not sure, but i didn't know they still showed music videos on mtv.
