It depends on the Athlon that you have. If it is Slot A, Socket A(462), Socket 754 then no. If it is Socket 939 then yes but they are scarce. If it is Socket AM2 then most definitely yes. If you download the program (link below) cpu-z you should be able to get this information. If not then search the Motherboard type you have in Google and it should tell you the socket type.

you're asking how...

... if you dont know how to do it dont do it, you could do more harm than good to your computer. generally AMD and Intel processors use different sockets so you would need to replace the motherboard as well, which may mean having to replace the RAM as well, if it is a different RAM socket on the new motherboard, and also may mean having to replace powerpack and hard drive, but its rare it goes that far.

If you have a AMD S939 CPU, then you can use a dual core S939 x2 procesosor, as long as your motherboard supports it, or with a BIOS update, most can do it without doing anything much.

If you have a AM2 CPU, then its standard for dual core support

it depends on the socket that it is being inserted to. You will have to check out the socket and make sure that the Dual core uses the same socket, you will also need to get a drived for it.
