I recently called up our local newspaper and asked if I could place an ad in for my new website I have up and running. It offers free classified ads and free personals. They said no because its competition.. can they do that?

Freedom of the press belongs to the person who owns the press.

The newspaper can absolutely refuse your ad. Why should they let your advertise a website which will take revenue away from them?

A newspaper is not a non-for-profit government agency. It's a business. There's nothing that says that the paper has to promote the competition. I know it's disappointing in this case, but it's reality.

I know how you feel, though. One time I tried to sell some baseball cards (a few sets) via a Pennysaver, using a free classified. They sent me a bill, saying it was a "commercial venture." Nice try, guys. Sometimes there's no such thing as a free lunch.

To bad but yes! They also can exept money to run stories that look like they are real stories about political matters.

In reality they are just propaganda. A radio station in Dallas texas is going to a "no commercial format" they say they will exept money to talk up promotions of anything.
