Or that you care too much and should care less, like you're obsessing?

I think "I could care less" and "I COULDN'T care less" have similar sardonic meanings, although grammatically they're actually opposites, or at least contradictory.

Personally, I prefer the phrase "I couldn't care less" when I'm trying to express contempt for a particular topic. But I know plenty of people who use "I could care less" far more frequently. Perhaps it's a geographical thing, like saying "pop" rather than "soda", etc.

Whatever the reason, I really couldn't care less about it.

People who say that are usually saying it wrong. They mean, "I could NOT care less", meaning they don't care at all and nothing means any less to them. I hate when people say, "I could care less" since that would mean they do care somewhat.

Everyone is used to saying it fast so it comes out as "I could care less"

Actually, most people say that wrong. It should be said : " I couldn't care less." In other words, you are saying it's impossible to care any less about the subject at hand than you already do.

I think it was more accurately "I couldn't care less" and has sort of mutated into the "I could care less" over time. I think that the "I could care less" version is meant to imply the same thing as more grammatically correct version.

It means I don't care about that problem or issue what have you. I could care less about that, then about what I had for lunch.

People mean to say "I COULD NOT care less." It's a misunderstanding of an older figure of speech.

Peace

This is actually a misquote. It should be "I couldn't care less". Meaning that you do not care at all or you care so liitle that it would be impossible to care less.
