The others did a good job at it. Circumcision is mostly done by America (although rates have fallen a lot; as low as 14% in some states now), Jews, and Muslims.

New studies have found that it reduces sensitivity/pleasure in the long run. And it makes masturbation more difficult. Those studies are in the British Journal of Urology.

The USA is the only advanced nation that has most of its guys circumcised, although that is slowly stopping, just as it did with the rest of English speaking nations (Europeans, Latin Americans, and most Asians don't circumcise, especially newborns.

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin which protects the end of a man's penis. It is NOT "extra" skin -- it serves a very important protective function and also adds much to the sexual pleasure of an intact man and his partner.

Circumcision is basically male genital mutilation. By the way, as a ritual among most Jews, it is done to the child at 8 days of age. The "coming of age" bar mitzvah at age 13 has nothing to do with circumcision. Some Moslem boys are circumcised at birth, some at puberty. Christians were told in the Bible that they should not do it.

Circumcision is the medical term for the removal of the foreskin of the penis. At birth, the head of the penis is covered by a sheath of skin that can be pulled back (and should for washing!). The jury is still out on whether or not it is more healthy for a male to be circumcised or not - and there are plenty of people on both sides of the argument. Some cultures, such as the Jewish culture, believe that one must be circumcised to show that they are "clean" ie fit for being God's people. Hope this helps.

If you live in the US... chances are reasonable you may have already had a circumcision when you were a baby. Parents make these decisions on your behalf "in your best interest".. some think its cleaner... others think its important that your penis "looks like daddy's"... others have cultural and religious reasons for performing the procedure.

As you can gather from the other answers... circumcision involves the surgical removal of a tube of skin that protects your glans (the knob on your willy). The tube of skin is called a foreskin. Well they snip that foreskin off so your knob is permanently exposed. Guys with foreskin can normally roll it back to expose their knob.

Now facts are that the foreskin was put there by God. It's his design for the penis. Perhaps he put it there so our knobs didn't dangle in the dirt when we sat naked cross legged near the fire... but for whatever reason it is there, people think they are very smart and try to improve on God's design, by taking to it with a sharp implement and they cut off the foreskin.... It's a bit like removing a ring of skin from one of your fingers but probably hurts a whole lot more (I have no memory of it since I was too young).

For me, I think the reasons for removal may have been appropriate 2000 years ago when a man had trouble finding a cake of soap and a hot shower... but in this day and age... it's not that difficult to wash your junk.... so I think the cultural reasons are way passed their use-by date... they are obsolete reasons. The foreskin, however, is not obsolete.

Circumcision is the cruel and hurtful thing that stupid parents do to their - usually newborn - sons. Most times they have no idea why they think it is necessary to take a male penis and mutilate it in the name of "health". Shortly after birth the male is physically restrained without benefit of freezing or other pain reducing methods and the skin surrounding the glans - the head of the penis - is cut and scraped away. While it is generally believed that new born males do not feel the pain, many people believe that some will in fact suffer immense pain and hurt which manifests itself in later years as negative attitudes and impaired social skills.
If you are an adult and thinking about the "thrill" of circumcision forget it. There will be a tremendous amount of pain and very little if any benefit.

Well,so far, everyone has said that it is the removal of the foreskin. It isn't just that, there is also female circumcision,Just as brutal, just as barbaric. In fact it is even more so however if we are just to concentrate on male circumcision, then yes it is the barbaric practice of mutilating the penis, usually,of a baby boy who has no means of defense, except their futile screams of pain.
