instead of punching the number in manuelly in the state of texas? Just wonder becuase I know when you swipe a credit card it ask for the drivers number.

Becuase some chick told me it was when i started my job, but i recently found out that others are swiping the drivers liscense too, and just wondered if this girl lied to me.

It depends on the State. In TX it is illegal.

The magnetic stripe on the DL contains information "owned" by the State, and may contain more than just the DL. If the State your in says it's OK to swipe it, then it's OK. If they say don't, then don't.

Most small business owners & store managers don't bother to ask, knowing they will likely never get caught if it is illegal and that if they do get caught they would get nothing more than a verbal warning.

I don't know of anyone prosecuted for "swiping" the DL yet (though they probably WOULD in connection with a fraud or Identiy theft ring that used a card reader)...

Why does it matter? If you have to give it to them, they have that information anyway.
