Apply for unemployment and/or temporary jobs. In the meantime, do some babysitting or whatever you can to earn money. You have to be more emotionally settled before you can plan a business of your own.

Take your time. Evaluate yourself - what do you really want to do? Look at it as an opportunity to start over fresh doing anything you want to. They say you'll never be happy or successful at your career unless you're doing something you love to do. Find what you love to do. I would suggest you start (if you haven't already) a blog and/or a website - there are plenty of free ones - I personally use and am a huge fan of Bravenet. Relax-you sound like you're smart and at least planned ahead for something like this, which a lot of us don't do. Maintain friendships and socialize - great way of finding opportunities you may not have thought of. Get your resume updated. Check out maybe some additional schooling or even learning something new while you can. Stay positive - I don't even know you but I can tell from your tone that you will be even better than before! Good luck to you!

I don't think this would be the right time to start a business (when you are yourself on "shaky" grounds). You might consider the option of seeing a job placement person at the employment office and at least get something temporary...until you get yourself straightened out (see the doctor as well for a bit of health advice). Once that is done and you're on your feet, then you can plan for something longer term. Good luck.

The worst time to think about starting your own business is when you're out of work. Go to a temp agency or drive around town and fill out applications, get something to help you get back on your feet and when you're more stable you can think about starting your own business. And if your depression EVER leads to thoughts of suicide, call or see a professional right away.
