Lateral thinking means expanding your list of possible solutions to a problem. When you think this way, you're not just using one "side" of your brain - you're using both sides. Hence the justification for the term "lateral," since the thinking spans both spheres.
Thinking straight means thinking clearly. You have full capacity of your mental capabilites and are not inhibited by such things as sleep deprivation, drugs, lost love, midterms coming up, etc.
To think straight means you're following one line of reasoning and not going off on other tangents or lines of thought. Your brain is actually not a sphere. If you look at it, it has all sorts of creases and in irregular in shape.
