For: It demonstrated the cowardice of the Americans to avoid fighting the war in a traditional way, face to face, in order to spare the lives of 'precious' soldiers. Interestingly, this cowardly way to wage war continues to this day.

Con: The bomb killed hundreds of thousands of innocent, defenseless citizens, and signalled the rise of the American empire, which will end sometime this century with their own citizens experiencing what it's like to endure a nuclear attack. KARMAS A *****!

Pro: It ended the war and let everyone know the true power of the atomic bomb (notice how none have been used since). It also prevented the USSR from taking over parts of Japan, which would have resulted in a split Japan after the war in much the same way there was a split Germany.

Con: It was used to destroy whole cities, killed indiscriminately. I am not sure how valid this argument is since the destruction of whole or large parts of cities (ie. Tokyo, Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden) was a common and acceptable military practice at the time.

For: it ended a war that conceivably could have been very long and costly (money and lives) if conventional warfare was used. That goes for both sides.

Against: It targeted many civilians, rather then smaller bombs which can target only military targets. Plus, we dropped a second one, after it was clear we had the power, ability, and desire to use one.

We all had to write the same paper in high school. The purpose is to make you critically think. Create a chart on your paper and list some pros and cons, turn them into sentences/paragraphs and you are good to go.
